Previously known as the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, NARSAD is a private, not-for-profit public charity 501(C)(3) organized for the purpose of raising funds for scientific research into the causes, cures, treatments and prevention of severe psychiatric brain and behavior disorders, such as schizophrenia and depression.
Its fund-raising and grant-making efforts are led by a Board of Directors with help from a variety of committees, volunteers, staff, and the thousands of donors who support NARSAD.
- Board of Directors: NARSAD Board Members raise funds for research, make policy decisions about the goals and objectives of NARSAD and have final approval on all grants recommended by the NARSAD Scientific Council. At least 50 percent of the directors have to be individuals whose families are affected by a psychiatric disorder.
- Scientific Council: The Scientific Council helps ensure that NARSAD grants support the most relevant scientific research. Comprised of the world’s top neuroscientists, including two Nobel Prize winners, members work without pay to develop policy and provide recommendations for funding to NARSAD’s Board of Directors.
- National Leadership Council: The National Leadership Council helps spread the word about the value of psychiatric research and how it will ultimately transform the lives of people with mental illness. NARSAD welcomes volunteers to join the National Leadership Council to help in whatever way they are able in organizing fund-raising events, luncheons, symposia, discussion groups or distributing literature and maintaining contact with other interested groups and organizations.
- National Leadership Awards: Without the selfless help of some very special people, NARSAD would not have grown and thrived throughout the years. NARSAD recognizes those people with special awards, the Peterson and Humanitarian Awards.
- Staff: NARSAD staff is comprised of a small group of professional and administrative personnel who are based in the National Office, located at 60 Cutter Mill Road, Suite 404, Great Neck, N.Y., 11021, U.S.A. Staff are involved in donor management, finance, the research grants program and marketing and communication, including the web site.
