Jack D. Barchas, M.D.
Chairman of Psychiatry and Psychiatrist-in-Chief
Barklie McKee Henry Professor of Psychiatry
Weill Medical College of Cornell University
Psychiatrist-in-Chief, New York Weill Cornell Medical Center of the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and the Payne Whitney Clinic in Manhattan and Westchester

Dr. Barchas' career has encompassed a long history of service to both neuroscience research and academic administration. Before coming to Cornell in 1993, he spent 25 years at Stanford University, where he was the Nancy Friend Pritzker Professor and director of the Pritzker Laboratory, an interdisciplinary program centered around fundamental aspects of behavioral neurobiology. He later served as dean for research development and neuroscience at the UCLA School of Medicine.

Dr. Barchas’ research has dealt with neuroregulators, chemical substances that transmit information between nerve cells and act as neurotransmitters or as modifiers of neuronal function. He identified previously unrecognized neuroregulators, studied fundamental neuroregulator control mechanisms and explored the roles of neuroregulators in animal and human behavior and in mental disorders and addiction.

Dr. Barchas has been a member of NARSAD’s Scientific Council since its inception in 1986, and directs the NARSAD Distinguished Investigator grant review.
