![]() William E. Bunney, Jr., M.D. Distinguished Professor Della Martin Chair of Psychiatry Co-Chair, Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior College of Medicine University of California, Irvine Dr. Bunney’s research interests center on clinical psychobiological studies of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and childhood mental illness. These include behavioral studies, studies of the efficacy and mode of action of psychiatriac medications, brain imaging, molecular genetic studies, neuropathological studies and investigations of brain-circuitry abnormalities that may be related to major psychoses. An area of intense current interest in neuroscience is a powerful new research methodology for discovering candidate genes for vulnerability to psychiatric disorders. Called microarray technology, it allows for the study of thousands of genes in a single experiment. Dr. Bunney is among leaders in the field who are collaborating in a multi-site program for applying microwave technology toward the identification of genes associated with mental disorders, opening the way to potential new targets for drugs and for prevention strategies. Dr. Bunney has been a member of NARSAD’s Scientific Council since its inception in 1986. He received NARSAD’s Falcone Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Affective Disorders Research in 2001 and a Distinguished Investigator Award in 1997. |
