Carpenter, M.D. Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmacology University of Maryland School of Medicine Director, Maryland Psychiatric Research Center Dr. Carpenter’s major interest is severe mental illness, especially schizophrenia. His approach to the care and study of patients has encompassed a medical model integrating biological, psychological and social data as they pertain to diagnosis, treatment and etiology. His work has led to fundamental contributions in psychopathology, assessment methodology, testing of new treatments and research ethics. Dr. Carpenter began his research in 1966 at the National Institute of Mental Health, where he used neuroendocrine strategies to study the psychobiology of affective disorders. He then collaborated in the World Health Organization’s International Pilot Study of Schizophrenia. Among special assignments, he gave expert testimony in the case of the U.S. vs. John Hinckley and in the Rennie et. al., vs. New Jersey right-to-refuse-treatment class action. In 1989, he was a member of the State Department delegation to inspect the political use of psychiatry in the Soviet Union. A member of NARSAD’s Scientific Council since its inception in 1986, Dr. Carpenter received NARSAD’s Lieber Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Schizophrenia Research in 2000, and NARSAD Distinguished Investigator Awards in 1996 and 2001. |
