![]() Robert M.A. Hirschfeld, M.D. Titus H. Harris Chair Harry K. Davis, M.D. Professor Professor and Chairperson Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston Dr. Hirschfeld’s research has significantly contributed to understanding the classification of depression and bipolar disorders, their clinical course, relationship to personality and personality disorders, and treatment with medication and psychotherapy. He and his colleagues developed the Mood Disorder Questionnaire, the most widely used screening instrument for bipolar disorder. Dr. Hirschfeld chaired the original and revision versions of the American Psychiatric Association's Work-group to develop practice guidelines for treatment of patients with bipolar disorder. He was chief of the Mood, Anxiety, and Personality Disorders Research Branch and clinical director of the Depression/ Awareness, Recognition and Treatment (D/ART) Program of the National Institute of Mental Health. A member of NARSAD’s Scientific Council since its inception in 1986, Dr. Hirschfeld received NARSAD’s Falcone Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Affective Disorders Research in 2003 and a Distinguished Investigator Award in 2002. |
