![]() Eric R. Kandel, M.D. University Professor Fred Kavli Professor and Director, Kavli Institute for Brain Sciences Columbia University Dr. Kandel has conducted pioneering investigations into the molecular mechanisms of memory storage, using as his research model the snail Aplysia. In recent studies, he and his colleagues have been investigating different examples of memory storage: explicit memory storage, the conscious recall of information about people, places, and objects, which they are studying in mice; and implicit memory storage, the unconscious recall of perceptual and motor skills, studied in Aplysia. They are focusing on synaptic mechanisms underlying learned fear, and also memory for space, a complex form of explicit memory storage. Dr. Kandel joined the Columbia faculty in 1974 as professor of physiology and psychiatry, and Columbia’s College of Physicians and Surgeons as founding director of the Center for Neurobiology and Behavior. He became University Professor in 1983. In 2000, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries concerning signal transduction in the nervous system.* A member of NARSAD’s Scientific Council since 1998, Dr. Kandel received NARSAD Distinguished Investigator Awards in 1995, 2000 and 2005. * Shared with Arvid Carlsson of Goteborg University, Sweden, and Paul Greengard of Rockefeller University. Dr. Greengard is a member of NARSAD’s Scientific Council. |
