Richard Keefe, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Duke University Medical Center Dr. Keefe’s research is devoted to trying to understand cognitive dysfunction in patients with schizophrenia and related disorders, and in people at high risk for them, and to improving treatment for cognitive deficits. He has been particularly involved in designing methods to assess cognitive change. He has led the development of batteries of tests for several multi-site studies of responses to cognitive dysfunction treatment, including the National Institute of Mental Health’s CATIE (Clinical Antipsychotic Trials in Intervention Effectiveness) Project, and BACS, the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia. Also, Dr. Keefe is the director of the chief neuropsychologists for the TURNS (Treatment Units for Research on Neurocognition and Schizophrenia) Project, sponsored by NIMH and aimed at finding new medications for improving cognition in schizophrenia patients. He is a member of the Neurocognition Committee of NIMH’s MATRICS (Measurement and Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia) Project. A member of NARSAD’s Scientific Council since 2006, Dr. Keefe received NARSAD Young Investigator Awards in 1991 and 1995. |
