![]() Kenneth S. Kendler, M.D. Banks Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Professor of Human Genetics Director, Virginia Institute of Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics Medical College of Virginia Virginia Commonwealth University To better understand the genetics of psychiatric and substance-abuse disorders, including schizophrenia, major depression, alcoholism and nicotine dependence, Dr. Kendler and his team have utilized methods ranging from family studies to twin studies to molecular genetic studies aimed at identifying the genomic location of specific genes that influence vulnerability. He has collected his research data in locations from New Zealand to Ireland, Norway and Sweden. At the Virginia Institute of Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics, where he has been director since 1996, Dr. Kendler and his colleagues explore many factors that intervene to modify the expression of genes in normal and abnormal behavior, including the different genetic and social contexts associated with gender and ethnic differences, variation in the family and individual environment and the inherent changes that occur during development and aging. A member of NARSAD’s Scientific Council since 1996, Dr. Kendler received NARSAD’s Lieber Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Schizophrenia Research in 1995 and a NARSAD Distinguished Investigator Award in 2000. |
