![]() James L. Kennedy, M.D. Professor of Psychiatry & Medical Sciences Centre for Addiction and Mental Health University of Toronto Dr. Kennedy’s studies at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, a leading Canadian facility for research and clinical care where he has worked since 1991, are devoted to identifying genes involved in mental illness. He has contributed significant findings on gene variants in the dopamine and serotonin systems relating to psychiatric disorders and to treatment response and has led studies of unstable DNA in mental illness. Dr. Kennedy and his colleagues are applying molecular genetic technology to investigations of schizophrenia, with a particular emphasis on first-episode psychosis and refractory schizophrenia, and to childhood depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, eating disorders and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Their program also continues studies of pharmacogenetics, genetic factors that may predict response to and side effects from psychiatric medications. In a recently initiated approach, they are integrating molecular genetics and advanced neuroimaging technology in explorations of brain structure and function. A member of NARSAD’s Scientific Council since 1996, Dr. Kennedy received a NARSAD Independent Investigator Award in 1995 and Young Investigator Awards in 1988, 1989 and 1990. |
