![]() Helen S. Mayberg, M.D. Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology Emory University School of Medicine Dr. Mayberg conducts functional imaging studies of various states of mood and emotion in health and disease. Her long-term interest in neural-network models of mood regulation led to the recent development of a new intervention that has generated international interest: deep brain stimulation to treat severely depressed patients who have not responded to other therapies. She initiated her deep brain stimulation research at the University of Toronto, where she was formerly director of the neuropsychiatry program at the Rotman Research Institute, and she is now continuing it with her group at Emory University. Dr. Mayberg has also been leading studies to systematically examine neural mechanisms mediating response to various antidepressant treatments, including pharmacotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and placebo, toward the goal of identifying neurobiological markers that will predict treatment response and thereby optimize treatment selection. A member of NARSAD’s Scientific Council since 2004, Dr. Mayberg received a NARSAD Young Investigator Award in 1991, an Independent Investigator Award in 1995, a Distinguished Investigator Award in 2002, and a Klerman Award Honorable Mention in 1996. |
