President, NARSAD Scientific Council



Herbert Pardes, M.D.
President and CEO
NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital


Dr. Pardes has an extensive background in health care and academic medicine and broad expertise in psychiatry, research, clinical care, education and national health policy. As president and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, his avowed mission is to provide each patient with the highest quality care delivered in the most compassionate manner.

Dr. Pardes was director of the National Institute of Mental Health and U.S. Assistant Surgeon General from 1978 to 1984. He was then appointed chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. In 1989, he became vice president for Health Sciences for Columbia University and dean of the faculty of medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

His participation in national health care policy also included the Presidential Advisory Commission on Consumer Protection and Quality in the Healthcare Industry and the Commission on Systemic Inter-operability, authorized to make healthcare information more accessible to patients and healthcare providers. He has negotiated and conducted international collaborations with a number of countries including India, China and the former Soviet Union.

Dr. Pardes has been the president of NARSAD’s Scientific Council since its inception in 1986. He served as chairman of the Council of Deans of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). He was president of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and served as chairman of the APA’s Council on Research for several years. Dr. Pardes is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has written more than 130 articles on mental health and academic medicine topics.
