NARSAD, The World's Leading Charity Dedicated to Mental Health Research is the largest donor-supported organization in the world that supports research on brain and behavior disorders. The organization’s mission is to raise and distribute funding for the most promising psychiatric disease research in order to develop new preventative measures, better diagnoses and improved treatments for these conditions. NARSAD also believes in educating the public about the value of psychiatric research. NARSAD’s research process guarantees the most promising psychiatric research gets supported. Each year, NARSAD invites scientists from all over the world and at different stages of their career to submit grant applications for review. The scientists provide NARSAD with extensive proposals of their research projects. Post doctoral fellows and assistant professors are eligible for Young Investigator Awards; associate professors for Independent Investigator Awards; and full professors for Distinguished Investigator Awards. NARSAD’s Scientific Council--comprised of leaders in the key disciplines of psychiatric brain disorders and includes two Nobel Prize winners--donates its time and talent in reviewing the grant proposals and recommending the most meritorious applications to the Board of Directors, which then approves them. The return on NARSAD’s investment has been enormous. NARSAD support has allowed scientists to publish important findings in the most prestigious medical journals, where their results are shared with other researchers, clinicians and the public. NARSAD support also allows researchers with new ideas to easily change research direction, which can be expensive. The supported scientists are then able to collect enough preliminary data to obtain subsequent funding for larger studies backed by the federal government. To keep pace with the rapid change of research, NARSAD has both broadened the scope of the projects it funds and increased its number of grants. Some exciting new directions include exploring the inter-relatedness of various psychiatric brain and behavior disorders, determining the precursors and profile of early onset signs and symptoms, and developing earlier intervention strategies for improved outcomes. This expansion has increased the development of new treatments, and has shed light on the biological, environmental and genetic underpinnings of psychiatric disorders. To support its research programs and educational symposia and publications, NARSAD seeks and receives contributions from individuals, families, foundations and corporations. Contributions may be received in the form of cash, stocks, mutual fund transfers, bequests, or special tributes. Planned giving options are available. Individuals are able to tie donations to research interests via NARSAD’s special Research Partner Program. Coordination of the fund-raising and grant-making activities occurs at NARSAD’s main headquarters in Great Neck, New York. NARSAD does not seek or receive government funding, but recently collaborated with the National Institute of Mental Health to create the Schizophrenia Research Forum, a unique online resource for scientists and the public about the disease. Scientific research provides real hope for better treatments and eventual cures for psychiatric brain disorders. Recent research advances, such as the human genome project, brain imaging, and targeted drug design, have changed the field of neuroscience, allowing significant gains for psychiatry, too. For the past 20 years, NARSAD has helped shape this exciting climate in psychiatric research. We ask you to now join us in our commitment to eradicate mental illness. |
