NARSAD is the largest donor-supported organization in the world dedicated to funding innovative scientific research to find the causes, improved treatments and cures for mental illnesses. NARSAD is pioneering leading-edge research into the causes, cures, treatments and prevention of depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety and childhood mental disorders. Over the last 20 years, NARSAD has distributed $233 million in research grants to 2,600 scientists in the United States and 27 other countries including $8.1 million to researchers in the Los Angeles area.
Painter Thom Bierdz and former “Young and the Restless” soap star and author of the recently published memoir, Forgiving Troy, was given the 2006 Thalian’s Key to the Light Award for his art contributions and courageous efforts in the fight against mental illness. Thom's body of work proves to be an uplifting and inspiring experience of transcendence, a compelling testimony to the resilience of the human spirit. Thom lost his mother at the hands of his paranoid schizophrenic brother, who later committed suicide. This horrific series of events led Thom to use art to make sense out of the senseless; to make something beautiful out of something tragic.
Dr. Carrie Bearden is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Biobehavioral Sciences & Psychology at UCLA’s Semel Institute. Dr. Bearden's research involves identifying brain-based traits ('endophenotypes') that may provide clues to the underlying etiology of psychosis and bipolar disorder. She is the recipient of two NARSAD Young Investigator grants.
Complimentary Admission.
Fifty percent of proceeds from the sale of artwork will be donated to NARSAD.
