2008 Research Symposium

Sarasota, FL

Three distinguished scientists investigating the causes and treatments of mental illness and brain disorders presented their latest research findings Saturday, Jan. 12, at the NARSAD Florida 2008 Research Symposium at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall in downtown Sarasota.

The symposium, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., is free and open to the public. Family and friends of people with mental illness are encouraged to attend. Health care professionals can earn continuing education units by attending.

Information booths and exhibits by local community mental health care providers and NARSAD will be open throughout the symposium in the Van Wezel Grand Foyer.

Physicians, licensed mental health counselors, licensed clinical social workers, nurses and clinical pharmacists can earn three CEUs/Contact Hours for a $20 fee. To register for CEUs or for more information, call Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s HealthLine at (941) 917-7777, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Founded by Lee and Bob Peterson, NARSAD Florida has raised almost $4 million for mental health research since 1998. The symposium precedes NARSAD Florida’s 11th Annual NARSAD Sunshine from Darkness Gala black-tie fundraiser, Sunday, Jan. 13, at the Ritz-Carlton Sarasota.

11th Annual Sunshine From Darkness Gala
Sarasota, FL


The 11th Annual NARSAD Florida Sunshine from Darkness Gala, a black-tie fundraiser benefiting mental health research, will fill the evening with the songs of Sinatra and circus thrills, Sunday, Jan. 13, from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., at the Ritz-Carlton Sarasota.

Gala guests will enjoy dancing to the sounds of the Don Juceam Orchestra throughout the evening and a special performance by the dazzling quick-change artists David and Dania Sudarchikov of Circus Sarasota.

Lee and Bob Peterson, Joyce and Robert Tate, Sheila Rabaut and Emily Walsh Parry are the co-chairs of the gala.

Northern Trust, Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, Scene Magazine and Manatee Memorial Hospital & Health System are the sponsors of NARSAD Florida 2008.

All proceeds from the NARSAD Florida Sunshine from Darkness Gala will fund mental health research. Founded by the Petersons, NARSAD Florida has raised almost $4 million for mental health research since 1998.

Special guests at the gala will include Geoff Birkett, the president and chief executive officer of NARSAD and David Shern, Ph.D., the president and chief executive officer of Mental Health America and a presenter at the NARSAD Florida 2008 Research Symposium. Dr. Shern will be recognized with NARSAD Florida’s 2008 Luminary Award. Previous recipients of the award, which recognizes extraordinary individuals who have dedicated themselves to reducing the stigma attached to mental illness and brain disorders include Sarasota philanthropist Virginia Toulmin, journalist Mike Wallace, the late Art Buchwald, Broadway star Barbara Cook, and Nobel Laureate John Forbes Nash and his wife, Alicia Nash.
