NARSAD’s Board of Directors today announced that its President and Chief Executive Officer Geoff Birkett has resigned to pursue other opportunities. CFO Lou Innamorato will serve as Acting President as the Board begins the search for a new President and Chief Executive Officer.

NARSAD Researchers Identify Specific Genes and Family Traits Linked to Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder and Depression
New finding that are providing important clues to how genes work to impair various aspects of attention, memory and perception -- the behaviors associated with many psychiatric illnesses, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression – were reported by NARSAD-supported scientists at the third annual Boston Mental Health Research Symposium on May 30, 2008.

NARSAD Researchers Showcase New Treatment Options for Severe Depression; Provide New Clues About Treating Clinical Anxiety and Schizophrenia
New findings from research supported by NARSAD, and conducted by scientists at Washington University’s School of Medicine (WUSM) now point to new options for treating preschool-aged children with significant clinical depression as well as those severely depressed adults who don’t respond to standard treatments, such as antidepressants and psychotherapy.

NARSAD's Research Symposium and Charity Dinner Highlight May 29-30 Events on State of Mental Health
NARSAD will host and participate in a series of events May 29-30, in Boston that will bring together North American business leaders, government officials and experts in the mental health field to address mental health in the workplace; provide an update on new developments in neuroscience that are accelerating the search for better treatments for schizophrenia, depression and bipolar disorder; and honor Massachusetts State Representative Peter Koutoujian for his local efforts to improve mental health care.

NARSAD Awards 235 New Grants for Research on Mental Illnesses, Providing Funds for Innovative Studies by Established and Early-Career Scientists
NARSAD has awarded 220 Young Investigator and 15 Distinguished Investigator grants, representing $14.3 million in new grants so far in 2008, with more grants to be awarded in late July. The studies will cover a range of serious mental illnesses, in which investigators will make use of the most powerful research tools available, including advanced genetic and imaging technologies.
