“BREAKTHROUGHS” is the first in a new series of publications conveying how NARSAD-supported research is contributing to major advances in the battle against mental illness. We present 8 stories about NARSAD investigators whose bold departures in research are deepening our understanding of neuropsychiatric illnesses, leading the way to new and better treatments, and making the prevention and cure of mental illnesses a possibility that grows nearer by the day. The scientists whose work is profiled here make clear the vital importance of a non-governmental funding source like NARSAD, which enables them to take intellectual risks and pursue novel ideas. As pointed out by Jack D. Barchas, M.D., Barklie McKee Henry Professor and chair of the department of psychiatry, Weill Medical College of Cornell University, and a member of NARSAD’s distinguished Scientific Council: “With the increased difficulty in funding at the federal level, the grant programs of NARSAD take on more importance than ever. These grants are one of the few mechanisms that facilitate genuinely new approaches. The grants should therefore be regarded as seed funds that facilitate innovation. If successful, the awardees will be in a good position to apply for funding from other sources, including the federal government’s National Institutes of Health.” BREAKTHROUGHS vol. 1, no. 1 Contents Herbert Meltzer and Clozapine: Making a Revolution in the Treatment of Schizophrenia Elliot Gershon and Pamela Sklar: On the Trail of Genes Involved in Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder Arturas Petronis and Epigenetic Scanning: Epigenetic Alterations of DNA May Help Explain the Mystery of Schizophrenia and Other Psychiatric Illnesses Francis Lee and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor: Predicting Who Will Respond to Psychiatric Medicines -- and Who Will Not Mark George and Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: A Non-Invasive Way to Treat Serious Depression When Drug Therapy Fails Helen Mayberg and Deep Brain Stimulation: A Bold New Treatment to Loosen Depression’s Grip Sarah Lisanby and Magnetic Seizure Therapy: A Depression Treatment That Improves on Electroconvulsive Therapy Grigori Enikolopov and the Imaging of Neural Progenitor Cells: Neurogenesis in the Adult Brain: A New Window on Mood Disorders Download a pdf of Breakthroughs, Vol. 1, No. 1
