NARSAD Brings Message of Hope with Its

NARSAD President Emeritus Constance Lieber learned firsthand about the devastating and disruptive effects of mental illness when her own daughter, Janice, was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

“We were looking for answers. We wanted to know what caused the illness and what could be done about it,” said Mrs. Lieber, who shares her family’s story in NARSAD’S new video, “To Find a Cure.”

Families like Mrs. Lieber's, searching for answers to mental illness and intent on accelerating the pace of research, led to the creation of NARSAD more than 20 years ago. Today, NARSAD is the world’s leading charity dedicated to mental health research, thanks to the generosity and commitment of thousands of donors. Since 1987, the organization has raised and awarded more than $220 million in grants to 2,500 scientists around the world who are conducting cutting-edge research.

“To Find a Cure” illumines how these two decades of research have led to progress in understanding and treating serious mental illness, to reducing stigma and to restoring hope.

In addition to Mrs. Lieber’s story, video highlights include:
  • “Chrissy’s Story,” an interview with the mother of Chrissy Rossi, a young woman who lost her life as a result of bipolar disorder
  • Thomas Insel, MD, Director of the National Institute of Mental Health
  • Interviews with NARSAD Scientific Council members:
    • Herbert Pardes, MD, President & CEO of New York-Presbyterian Hospital
    • Jeffrey Lieberman, Chair, Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University & Director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute
    • Eric Kandel, MD, 2000 Nobel Laureate and Professor of Physiology and Psychiatry, Columbia University
    • Helen Mayberg, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology, Emory University
    • Daniel R. Weinberger, MD, Chief, Clinical Brain Disorders Branch, National Institute of Mental Health
  • Interview with Brooke Katz, a young woman overcoming the devastating impact of schizoaffective disorder.
NARSAD-supported research focuses on serious mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders (obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder) and a range of childhood disorders that can be diagnosed as early as six years old.

In addition to research funding, the organization also sponsors educational symposia events throughout the U.S. to help the public better understand mental health issues and find out how their local researchers are working to find better treatments...and eventually cures.
