Television series episodes being broadcast on NARSAD website

In creating and broadcasting “Healthy Minds,” a 13-part series addressing the latest information about the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness, public television station WLIW21 of Long Island, N.Y., and its partners hoped to reduce the stigma associated with psychiatric disease, which often prevents patients and their families from getting needed help.

Now even more people will have the opportunity to view the award-winning series as WLIW21 in collaboration with NARSAD streams the half-hour episodes here on NARSAD’s website.
(Please note, the series is currently being rebroadcast on Sundays at 7:30 a.m (ET) on WLIW-21.)

The series was honored recently with four prestigious Telly Awards. Tellys recognize the very best local, regional, and cable television programs, as well as video and film productions.

More information about the "Healthy Minds" television series

For many families, the fear and shame associated with a diagnosis of mental illness often leads to suffering without hope. Healthy Minds, a 13-part series developed by public television station WLIW (Channel 21) on Long Island, aims to remove the stigma that can prevent patients and their families from seeking help for mental disorders.

Each half-hour episode humanizes a particular mental health condition through inspiring personal stories, with the latest information about diagnosis and treatment provided by leading researchers and experts from institutions such as Columbia University, Rockefeller University and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Episodes cover a range of topics to bring the general public a better understanding of disorders that can affect anyone, at any age.

In the premiere episode, news veteran Mike Wallace and his wife Mary discussed how they dealt with his depression, revealing intimate details about his suicide attempt and ultimate recovery.

Healthy Minds is hosted by Jeffrey Borenstein,M.D., who is CEO and medical director of Holliswood Hospital in Queens, N.Y., and chair for the section on psychiatry at the New York Academy of Medicine. The executive producer of the series is Theresa Statz Smith; co-producer, Mary Puma.
