Bonnie L. Firestein, Ph.D.
Independent Investigator
Bonnie L. Firestein, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Cell Biology and Neuroscience at Rutgers University in Piscataway. She received her B.S. from the University of Michigan with high honors in 1988 and her Ph.D. in Neuroscience in 1995 from the University of California, San Diego. She was awarded an Excellence in Renal Physiology Award from the American Physiological Society for her doctoral work with Dr. Paul Insel. After completing her doctorate, Dr. Firestein worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, San Francisco under the guidance of Dr. David Bredt. She established her own laboratory at Rutgers University in 2000. Since then, her work has focused on identifying mechanisms by which synaptic proteins are targeted and how dendrite morphology is shaped during neuronal development. Her most recent work focuses on genes implicated in schizophrenia and how the proteins encoded by these genes alter neuronal morphology and synaptogenesis, two processes known to go awry in this disorder.
