Dr. McClung received her bachelor's degree in Biology with a minor in chemistry at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1994. She went on to obtain a Ph.D. in biology at the University of Virginia in Dr. Jay Hirsh's laboratory in 2001. She was then a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. Eric Nestler at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where she started her current position as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern in 2005. She is particularly focused on the importance of these genes on drug addiction and mood disorders such as bipolar disorder and seasonal affective disorder. NARSAD has been pivotal in the support of her research.
