Tanja Adam, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of the University of California, San Francisco, plans to evaluate the contribution of opioid tone to stress-induced overeating in depression. Dr. Adam’s hypothesizes that weight gain in depression is often caused by an increase in appetite association with opioid circuits in the brain. The outcome of her study may contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms underlying overeating in some depressed subjects. If opioid tone plays an important role in non-homeostatic eating in depression, results could provide support for the development of treatment and early prevention strategies.
