Paul P. Allen, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of Institute of Psychiatry/King's College London/University of London, will use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure patterns of neural activation and connectivity in individuals at risk of developing schizophrenia. Dr. Allen hypothesizes that abnormal connectivity between frontal and temporal regions (particularly the medial temporal lobe) will be predictive of transition to first episode psychosis. His study of at risk individuals offers the opportunity to assess changes in brain function in the early stages of the illness without the effects of medication.
