Stephan G. Anagnostaras, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of Emory University, will seek to determine the relationship among various behavioral measures of unlearned and conditioned fear at a mathematical level. The study of fear and anxiety in mutant mice offers the possibility of understanding genetic vulnerability in humans for anxiety disorders. Currently there are many diverse measures of conditioned fear and unlearned anxiety that are utilized in rodents. In order to reveal shared and unshared components of these behavioral measures, Dr. Anagostaras will study the effects of anti-anxiety medication, neuroanatomical lesions and targeted genetic mutations in mice. A greater understanding of the relationship between the behavioral measures of conditioned fear and unlearned anxiety in mice will greatly improve our understanding of their relevance to human anxiety disorders.
