Amit Anand, M.D. (Independent Investigator 2007) of Indiana University, aims to explore the question of why there is an increased risk of suicide associated with the use of antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), in the treatment of children, adolescents and young adults with depression. Dr. Anand’s study will combine for the first time the use of state-of-the-art functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and genetic research to identify biomarkers for high-risk individuals, and to determine whether this information can be used to judiciously administer antidepressants to high-risk populations.
