Marco Atzori, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute, is investigating the effects of dopamine on transmission of the neurotransmitter GABA in the brain cortex. A major target of dopamine fibers is the “GABA interneurons.” It is possible that an alteration in the way dopamine regulates these interneurons may explain the symptoms of schizophrenia. Electrical recordings of neuronal currents in different components of the GABA interneuron will be made using a technique developed in Dr. Atzori's laboratory. Different morphologies associated with the physiological profile of each class of GABA interneuron will be identified. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
