Silviu-Alin Bacanu, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2005) of Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of the University of Pittsburgh, will study the genetic causes of schizophrenia and related disorders, such as bipolar disorder through linkage analysis, which is a technique often employed to narrow the search for genetic variants. Linkage seeks regions of increased identity-by-descent (IBD) sharing among affected relatives. In his first NARSAD award, Dr. Bacanu established a new method to compute critical values for a linkage scan of a single trait. He now proposes to develop a method to estimate critical values for linkage scans for multiple and highly correlated traits, and will then analyze linkage scans arising from the analysis of correlated traits associated with schizophrenia, and other psychiatric disorders. Program Area: OTHER\General-Mental Illness |
