Laura D. Baker, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2002) of VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VA), is exploring the relationship between biological systems regulating gonadal hormones and those regulating the stress response (the interaction is such that activity in one system may preempt activity in another). She will evaluate the effect of cortisol level manipulations on estrogen-induced mood and cognitive benefits for postmenopausal women. The study has implications for stress-associated conditions such as depression in women. The results may provide novel information regarding the nature of the interaction between these hormonal systems that occurs in response to stress, and suggest conditions under which the beneficial effects of estrogen may be overshadowed. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar) |
