Mark E. Bangs, M.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of Indiana University, is conducting a placebo-controlled study of valproic acid (the active chemical in Depakote) in children and adolescents with primary mood disorders. This group of disorders is relatively common in young people, and is associated with a number of concomitant problems, including social difficulties, school problems, and drug and alcohol abuse. Thirty children and adolescents with primary mood disorders will be randomized to receive either valproic acid or placebo for 12 weeks, at which time the groups will be compared to determine whether this medication is safe and effective.
