Michel Barrot, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, hypothesizes that the activity of transcription factors (chemicals which turn genes on and off) in a brain region called the nucleus accumbens may alter motivation and reward processes. To test this hypothesis, changes in behavior of adult rats will be examined following changes in activity of specific transcription factors in the nucleus accumbens. Then, Dr. Barrot will attempt to identify the target genes responsible for these behavioral changes. This project may open new lines of investigation on the molecular basis of motivation and reward, potentially improving our understanding of disorders in which these functions are disturbed, such as depression.
