Susan S. Bassett, Ph.D. (Independent Investigator 2007) of Johns Hopkins University, will study the effects of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) on brain structure and function in patients with bipolar disorder. Brain-imaging studies have shown differences in bipolar disorder patients in terms of cognitive function, and that those with HSV-1 infection show greater cognitive impairment. Dr. Bassett will use a number of brain imaging modalities to identify markers of specific cognitive abnormalities in bipolar disorder patients with HSV-1. Identification of such differences has the potential to guide individualized treatment decisions as well as provide a window for assessing drug response in the brain.
