Anirban Basu, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2005) of the University of Chicago, aims to estimate the cardiovascular (CVD) risks and costs associated with the long-term use in schizophrenics of atypical antipsychotics, which have been associated with weight gain, hyperglycemia and diabetes, all risk factors for heart disease. Dr. Basu first plans to measure the effects of the drugs on plasma lipids, obesity, glucose metabolism and hypertension. Dr. Basu then will associate these risk factors with insulin resistance and the long-term risk of diabetes and CVD in schizophrenics compared to the general population. He hopes to develop a model that provides an estimate of the long-term CVD risk and the cost of care for schizophrenic patients under different drug regimens. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
