Bora E. Baysal, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, is attempting to identify a gene that may play a major role in bipolar disorder. In previous work, Dr. Baysal and colleagues have identified a specific chromosomal rearrangement in members of a small family with bipolar disorder. Further work showed that a large new gene on chromosome 11 is physically disrupted by this chromosomal rearrangement. It is hypothesized that inactivation of one copy of this gene may predispose to bipolar disorder. Dr. Baysal will screen bipolar patients to identify other mutations or disease-predisposing gene variants. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Bipolar |
