Yuly Bersudsky, M.D., Ph.D. (Independent Investigator 2007) of Ben Gurion University, will test the use of oxygen therapy for schizophrenia. Under normal conditions, cellular metabolic rate, as shown by oxygen and glucose consumption, increases proportionally with increases in neuronal activity. Emerging data suggest that impaired energy metabolism in the brain plays a role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Oxygen-enriched air inhalation has been shown to increase brain oxygen supply, and hyperoxia therapy is a useful tool in the treatment of neurological and neurotrauma deficits. Based on these observations, Dr. Bersudsky plans to conduct a trial of enriched oxygen therapy to see if it can provide a simple, effective treatment for schizophrenia.
