Zubin Bhagwagar, M.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of University of Oxford, will study fully recovered subjects with a history of bipolar disorder, who are off medication. Serotonin (5-HT) has been widely implicated as a cause of mood disorders. Using Postron Emission Tomography (PET) and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS), Dr. Bhagwagar will investigate a group of biological markers which are critical in the understanding of the role of 5-HT in mood disorders. Dr. Bhagwagar hypothesizes that patients with a history of bipolar will show a reduction in the availability of a specific serotonin receptor (5-HTu), and of the neurochemicals glutamate and N-acetylaspartate.
