Hilary P. Blumberg, M.D. (Young Investigator 2002) of Yale University School of Medicine, is investigating the possibility that task-related dysfunction in the ventral prefrontal cortex (VPFC) and amygdala in Bipolar Disorder (BD) results from a reduction in functional connectivity between these regions that is due to an underlying structural deficit in the connectivity between the regions. Using fMRI, Dr. Blumberg will study: VPFC and amygdala by examining low frequency spatiotemporal correlations in resting fMRI signal; and structural connectivity utilizing diffusion tensor MRI. Dr. Blumberg's proposal will utilize cutting edge procedures that will yield some of the first observations of functional and structural brain connectivity in vivo in Bipolar Disorder, and are likely to provide novel insights into the disorder.
