James R. Brasic, M.D., M.P.H. (Young Investigator 2000) of Johns Hopkins University, is investigating the role of a class of nicotinic receptors in the brains of patients with schizophrenia. An abnormality of these receptors is suggested by the fact that patients with schizophrenia have a very high rate of smoking, arguing that these receptors may be decreased in number. Dr. Basic will use positron emission tomography (PET) to examine the distribution of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in patients with schizophrenia. This study has the potential to facilitate the development of effective and safe nicotinic-based medications for the treatment of schizophrenia. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
