Gerome Breen, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of Institute of Psychiatry/King's College London/University of London, seeks to examine why some individuals abuse a drug and develop psychiatric problems and distinguish these from the purely addictive effects of the drug. Dr. Breen plans to do this by analyzing a large collection of DNA samples from methamphetamine abusers from Taiwan. Examining the underlying genetic vulnerability of individuals to such traits/disorders is perhaps one of the best ways to move forward in treatment as both psychosis and addiction are highly heritable (familial).
