Anne Buist, MBBS, M.Med., M.D., FRANZCP (Independent Investigator 2005) of Austin Hospital/University of Melbourne, points out that pregnancy and delivery present a significant risk of relapse of bipolar disorder. Sleep disturbance is thought to play a key part in the relapse but there have been few studies examining its role. This study looks to examine sleep patterns and circadian rhythms in three groups of women: one group with bipolar disorder who seek to cease mood stabilizer medication during their pregnancy, another group of women who remain on mood stabilizers throughout, and a third matched control group of women with no psychiatric history. Findings from this study will help advise treatment regarding mood stabilizer and hypnotic use in women with bipolar disorder who become pregnant. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Bipolar |
