Murray Cairns, BSc(hon), Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of the University of Newcastle, plans to investigate an extensive gene silencing system mediated and controlled by non-coding RNA that has new research has revealed. This non-coding RNA is generated from segments of the genome that were previously thought to have no significance, sometimes referred to as "junk DNA.” Dr. Cairns will investigate the extent of the gene-silencing network and identify the functional consequences of this dysfunction in the context of schizophrenia. This research has the potential to dramatically alter the understanding of the pathogenesis of schizophrenia and could have important implications for the development of new diagnostics, therapeutics or early intervention strategies in high-risk individuals. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
