Frederick Cassidy, M.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of John Umstead Hospital, is examining the effects of medications and alcohol on levels of a chemical called homocysteine in patients with bipolar disorder. Elevated homocysteine is regarded as a significant risk factor for premature heart disease and stroke. Anticonvulsants and other medications used in patients with bipolar disorder may elevate homocysteine levels, which can be lowered by intake of certain vitamins. This work may help identify, and ultimately prevent, a potential predisposing factor to heart disease in patients with bipolar disorder. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Bipolar |
