Idil Cavus, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of Yale University School of Medicine, is examining the mechanisms by which estrogen treatment regulates nerve growth factors that are implicated in depression. A role of estrogen in major depression is suspected based on higher rates of depression in women; and a relationship between changes in estrogen levels and symptoms of depression. Dr. Cavus will study the effects of estradiol (a form of estrogen) on the formation of factors that increase the growth of nerve cells in the hippocampus and cortex of the brain. It is expected that this study will help elucidate the neurobiological effects of estrogens, which could in turn aid in the development of more specific and safe treatments for depression in women. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar) |
