Raymond C.K. Chan, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of University of Hong Kong, will examine the early course of neurocognitive impairment (e.g. attention, memory, planning) in first episode schizophrenia in a Chinese sample. Currently, controversy exists as to whether cognition improves after treatment for psychosis, or shows some deterioration. Recent evidence suggests that within the first years of illness, patients progress to suffer from an extensive range of impairments. Therefore, it is necessary to study patients identified early. Dr. Chan will then attempt to make a cross-cultural comparison between Hong Kong and Vancouver samples. This work will identify factors associated with the neurocognitive decline which is an important long-term prognostic factor. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
