Haiming Chen, M.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of Johns Hopkins University, is working to identify a potential susceptibility gene for bipolar disorder. Previous work suggested linkage on a region of chromosome 18 in families with bipolar disorder, a finding which has been replicated. Dr. Chen will focus on this chromosomal region to ascertain the specific genes associated with the disorder. Sophisticated molecular genetic techniques will be used. This project may lead to a better understanding of the genetic basis of bipolar disorder, and lead to future, more detailed studies of this chromosomal region. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Bipolar |
