Benjamin N.R. Cheyette, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute, will examine the role of a biochemical signaling pathway called Wnt in neural development and behavior. For this purpose, the distribution and function of Dapper, a new component of the Wnt signaling pathway, will be characterized. In addition, the relation of the expression of Dapper to other Wnt pathway members will be investigated, and the gene for Dapper will be removed in order to investigate its effects on brain development and behavior. This work may have relevance to understanding the pathogenesis of schizophrenia, because certain Wnt pathway components have diminished expression in the brains of patients with schizophrenia.
