Jean-Francois Cloutier, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2002) of Johns Hopkins University, will study one family of molecules capable of directing neuronal processes, the secreted semaphorins, and their receptors, the Neuropilius, in the development of specific brain structures found to be affected in schizophrenic patients. Using a mouse model, Dr. Cloutier will attempt to determine how these molecules regulate the normal development of brain areas showing abnormalities in schizophrenic patients. This study will provide insight into the underlying molecular mechanisms required for correct neural connectivity in a variety of systems where developmental abnormalities have been linked to schizophrenia. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
