Paola Dazzan, M.D., MSc, MRCPsych (Young Investigator 2003) of Institute of Psychiatry, aims to establish whether the brain abnormalities observed when patients have their first episode of psychosis progress during the following five years. The hypothesis is that first-episode patients will have smaller volumes of the medial temporal lobe, they will show memory processing deficits related to the functioning of this brain area, and that its volume will show a further reduction 5 years after the first episode. Using MRI brain scans Dr. Dazzan will study brain structure and neuropsychological function in schizophrenia patients first assessed 5 years ago and in healthy controls who were also assessed at that time. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
