John N. Dieter, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of Emory University, is studying the effects of maternal depression, environmental stress, and psychiatric medications on development of the fetus and newborn infant. Women with clinical depression on antidepressants, non-medicated depressed women, and controls will be included in the study. A number of measurements of fetal and newborn neurological and behavioral performance will be made. It is predicted that the fetuses of non-medicated depressed women will show greater motor behavior, a decreased ability to habituate to vibratory stimulation, poorer behavioral performance, and less organized sleep. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar)\Maternal Depression |
