E. S. Louise Faber, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of Queensland Institute of Medical Research, will study disruptions in the prefrontal cortex using the rat as a model. Disorders of the prefrontal cortex have been implicated in a multitude of mental health problems, including schizophrenia, psychosis, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. The research will involve making electrical recordings from superficial prefrontal cortex neurons in vitro to study mechanisms of communication between neurons. These experiments will help provide the basic building blocks for understanding the functioning of the prefrontal cortex, and are therefore vital for developing new treatments for neurological disorders that arise from its dysfunction.
