James R. Fadel, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of Vanderbilt University, is investigating the organization of a pathway that links the hypothalamus and the ventral tegmental area. Dysfunction in this pathway has been suggested to underlie schizophrenia. Dr. Fadel will use techniques that stain neurons with antibodies in order to examine an opioid peptide called orphanin FQ which is present in the hypothalamus and ventral tegmental area. It is hypothesized that orphanin FQ may mediate interactions between these two brain regions. This work may help lead to a better understanding of the physiology of brain pathways that may be dysregulated in schizophrenia. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
