Lisa Fenton, PSYD (Young Investigator 2002) of Connecticut Mental Health Center, is studying the benefit of combining electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Though ECT is effective for many individuals with major depression, many people experience a relapse of symptoms within the six month period following the treatment. CBT has been shown to be effective independently in the treatment of depression, and has been shown to be effective in maintaining states of remission. Dr. Fenton will develop will develop a model a model of CBT specifically for patients receiving ECT treatment for major for major depressive disorder. The goal will be to determine if combining the two treatment modalities could increase and prolong the benefits of ECT.
